Challenge
The intersection of Golden Hill Road and Union Road in the City of Paso Robles, California was a four-way stop. The City of Paso Robles wanted to improve traffic flow and safety at this intersection.
Solution
Kittelson supported Wallace Group during the preliminary engineering phase of intersection improvements by providing roundabout analysis and design peer review, public engagement support, and street lighting PS&E, resulting in a recommendation to move forward with the roundabout concept for the intersection. To support community and decision-maker engagement, Kittelson developed an animated simulation of the roundabout with traffic circulating through it using the microsimulation program VISSIM. After this plan was approved by the City, Kittelson supported Wallace Group in the final plans, specifications, and cost estimates for the roundabout.
The Outcome
A Not-So-Nutty Solution for a Safer and Smoother Traffic Flow: Paso Robles' Peanut-About
The City of Paso Robles opened a single-lane roundabout (referred to as the “peanut-about” due to its unique shape) that will improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection.
