Challenge
The City of Raleigh was interested in extending their Vision Zero program to build on prior systemic safety efforts to manage speeds and implement safety improvements across their municipal borders. They decided to go after funding to develop a safety action plan through a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) planning grant.
Solution
Kittelson worked with the City of Raleigh to develop an application for the SS4A planning grant to assess factors contributing to fatal and severe-injury crashes in the transportation-disadvantaged population in Raleigh. This included using ArcGIS to prepare maps depicting safety concerns and demographics throughout the City’s census blocks. Our team developed the approach to an action plan that has community engagement at its core and implementation-focused results, worked with stakeholders to provide letters of support for the grant, and developed a narrative and anticipated funding needs for improving transportation safety in key areas of the City.
The Outcome
Securing SS4A Funding to Expand Vision Zero Program in Raleigh
The City of Raleigh was awarded an $800K planning grant through SS4A to develop a safety action plan, which will serve as the foundation for future safety initiatives throughout the City.
