Challenge

In September 2022, the Mayor of Everett, Massachusetts set a goal to end traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by 2030. The City of Everett has been taking steps to achieve this goal, starting with a Safety Action Plan, and sought funding from the Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant program to implement the recommended safety improvements.

Solution

Kittelson worked with the City of Everett to write a Safety Action Plan to develop strategies and treatments to address roadway safety throughout the City. The plan used MassDOT’s crash- and risk-based network screening tools to identify intersections and segments with the highest crash severity and crash risk. In the second round of the SS4A program, we worked with the City to write a grant application for supplemental planning and demonstration funding to make interim improvements and position the City for future funding.

The Outcome

Leveraging SS4A to Meet Vision Zero Goals

The City of Everett’s grant application awarded them $90,000 in supplemental planning and demonstration funding from SS4A that they are using to implement demonstration projects around the community. These projects are helping the City engage with the community, make immediate improvements, and gather data that will direct their next steps in implementing the Safety Action Plan.
