Challenge
Boston’s Allston-Brighton neighborhood has experienced rapid growth in new residential, commercial, and institutional development. While this development adds vibrancy and economic opportunity to the neighborhood, it also raises questions about how the existing multimodal transportation system will accommodate existing and planned development.
Solution
Kittelson partnered with the Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) to lead a community-based planning process to develop a menu of recommendations to improve safety, access, and mobility for all modes and provide quality-of-life benefits for the Allston-Brighton neighborhood.
The Outcome
Redefining Travel in Growing Boston Neighborhoods
The study recommended specific, actionable improvements to the transportation network to alleviate bottlenecks and increase safety and mobility for all modes. It focuses on key opportunities to provide non-auto travel options, especially leveraging bus transit, to facilitate growth within a constrained urban context.
