Challenge

What happens when emerging technologies, such as connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) find their way to the state of Alaska, where 80% of communities are inaccessible by the road system? The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) sought a plan to prepare Alaskan communities for emerging vehicle technologies, customized to the state’s unique climate and geography.

Solution

Our team pulled together best practices and tailored them for the Alaska context through collaboration with the Alaska CAV Working Group, which is comprised of representatives from numerous state and partner agencies and industry. The CAV Working Group Strategic Plan summarizes Alaska’s current CAV readiness and centers around roads, highways, and associated infrastructure that will support the deployment of emerging technologies.

The Outcome

Bringing Automated Vehicles to the Frozen North

The Alaska DOT&PF will work with partner agencies to implement the recommendations of the Plan, including the pursuit of partnerships with technology companies to test emerging designs in the Alaska environment.
