As of March 2022, Dr. H. Gene Hawkins is officially on the team at Kittelson & Associates and Kittelson LLC!

Gene has an extensive background in traffic operations, with particular interest in traffic control systems, traffic control standards, driver response to traffic control devices, retroreflectivity, and visibility. He has been a principal investigator or coprincipal investigator for numerous research studies, most evaluating signs, markings, and other traffic control devices. He is a former chair of the Transportation Research Board’s Traffic Control Devices Committee and is the current Chair for the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Prior to his time at Kittelson, Gene was a professor in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University and held a joint appointment as a research engineer with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, where he taught transportation engineering courses to undergraduate and graduate civil engineering students and conducted research in transportation operations.

Gene is a leading expert on traffic control devices and is the keeper of one of our industry’s most extensive online guides to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), including a collection of previous editions, how the MUTCD relates to risk, and practical information for how it can be applied. Gene is currently working on an updated version of this website, which will be released later this spring.
